What is Mohs Surgery

February 22, 2021

Mohs surgery  has been refined into the most advanced, precise, and effective treatment for an ever increasing variety of skin cancers. It is used to treat the most common types of skin cancer-such as basal cell carcinoma (most common) and squamous cell carcinoma (most aggressive) as well as  some kinds of melanoma. This procedure is designed to remove the entire tumor while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue intact and unharmed.

IDEAL CANDIDATES FOR MOHS SURGERY

This treatment is most commonly used for people who have skin cancers on the hands , face, or neck (high risk locations), a predisposition to multiple skin cancers, recurrent cancer, and rapidly growing or large tumors.

THE PROCEDURE

At the start of the procedure, local anesthesia is given to the area of the tumor. This numbs the area and keeps it comfortable for the patient. Mohs surgery is very unique in its precision. The dermatologist removes the entire visible tumor and a somewhat large area of normal- appearing skin around it.  Thin layers are taken out systematically, and examined under a microscope, looking for malignant cells.  Layers are removed until all of the areas of the tissue are tumor-free, then surgery is complete.

WHY IS MOHS SURGERY IMPORTANT

It has a cure rate of over 98 percent, and conserves the greatest amount of healthy tissue, giving you the smallest scar possible . This cost effective surgery is speedy and efficient, with removal and evaluation done in one visit,
