What Is Microneedling?

April 20, 2021

Have you been searching the beauty aisles for beauty creams and answers to your aging skin? Are you looking to rejuvenate a tired, dull face? Microneedling may be just the treatment for you! This procedure helps to stimulate and increase collagen growth, which rejuvenates elastin, leaving your skin smoother and firmer. The board certified dermatologists at Bay Dermatology have more information about what you need to have tighter, brighter and healthier skin!

Shot of microneedling treatment

Benefits Microneedling Has on Your Skin

This treatment works by penetrating deep into your dense connective tissue, known as dermis, activating collagen production to give your skin a more youthful appearance.  If you would like to delay the aging process, microneedling can also help eliminate those pesky fine line and wrinkles. It can also help eliminate stretch marks and chicken pox scars.

Understanding the Microneedling Process

Still wondering about the process? The National Center for Biotechnical Information considers microneedling a therapeutic procedure because the needles used during the treatment are virtually invisible. Before we begin, a topical cream is used to numb your skin. The procedure starts by creating miniscule holes in your skin stimulating and producing new collagen cells. Those with a fear of needles shouldn’t dismiss this procedure, as you can expect a pain-free, 15 to 30 minute appointment. A small handheld device, called a Derma Roller gently glides across your skin on the surface, creating tiny superficial punctures. The holes are invisible to the human eye and are so tiny that they make for an easy recovery.

What to Expect Post Microneedling Treatment

During the initial treatments, individuals may experience a feeling like they are sunburned and also possible skin discoloration. These side effects will disappear with each follow-up session.  Using topical creams before the procedure and after will help with the healing.

When Will Results of Microneedling Appear?

Be patient! Microneedling allows your skin to experience a natural process of healing. Depending on the area, your skin may take anywhere from three to six treatments to see desired results. Natural collagen growth occurs over several weeks.
