WHAT IS MOHS SURGERY, AND HOW IS IT USED?

Mohs surgery is an intricate, precise, very effective procedure, used for treating basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers. It is cosmetically and functionally important, especially around the lips, eyes, nose ears, and scalp. Also, it can be used on fingers, toes and genitals and is highly effective for large, aggressive or rapidly growing BCC (basal cell cancer or SCC (squamous cell cancer). Some surgeons also are quite successful using Mohs surgery on certain cases of melanoma.

About the Procedure

This procedure is performed by specialized, highly trained doctors in Mohs surgery and pathology . During Mohs surgery a surgeon removes the cancerous lesion with a special instrument and sends the entire frozen and stained sample to be analyzed in the lab. If any cancerous cells remain, the surgeon returns to operating room to remove the rest of the cancerous cells. This is repeated until all cancer is removed.

Advantages of Mohs Surgery

  • The surgery results are precise. The doctor examines 100 per cent of the tumor margins, while keeping healthy tissue and leaving a very smallest of scars.
  • Mohs is cost effective and an efficient treatment, done as an outpatient procedure and usually only requires a single visit. The surgeon uses local anesthesia and sometimes an on-site lab
  • Mohs offers the highest skin cancer cure rate, with up to 99 per cent for skin cancers that haven’t been treated before and 94 per cent for recurring from previous treatment.
