Skincare During Florida Winter (Hint: It’s Not as Simple as You Think!)

December 21, 2021

Florida is a beautiful state that stays warm to hot almost year-round. However, even in The Sunshine State, winter will have your skin begging for a little more TLC than you normally give. Here are a few unique ways to keep your skin moist, healthy, and ready for the Florida summer months, as well as general advice for all kinds of winter weather skincare routines.

Drier Air Equals Drier Skin

As all winters go, Florida gets much drier than normal, and the dry season lasts almost half a year (from October to July!). This, combined with the fact that our bodies adjust to whatever climate we’re in, means that a warmer Florida winter over the years will hit your body (and your skin) similar to a cold Boston or New York deep freeze would. Making sure your skin stays moisturized is the biggest factor in maintaining a healthy glow. Lukewarm showers strip away less natural oils than hot ones, and moisturizing right after showering helps lock in some of that water. Pat dry instead of rubbing with a towel and go easy on the exfoliating. You can also use a humidifier at home to reduce the effects of the dry air combined with the heat you’re pumping into the house.

Picking the Right Products Matters

Of course, if your routine should be different, the products you should be using will likely change too. If your normal cleansers contain drying agents like salicylic acid, try switching to those made for moisturizing instead. Emollients are amazing for keeping your skin healthy during the winter but take a while to absorb. Overnight treatments and using them right after showering will maximize the benefits you’ll get over time. You can also use these products a few times a day, along with something else you should always be using: sunscreen! That’s right, just because winter is here doesn’t mean you should skip out in the SPF. Damaging UV light has little to do with how hot it is outside, so slather on the sunscreen and your skin will thank you.

Don’t Forget the Basics of Skincare

Adding a few steps to your routine doesn’t mean you can forget the obvious ways you can keep your skin healthy. Eating right and exercising keep your body happy; and trust us, it will repay you with clearer skin. Getting the right nutrients and staying stress-free is an easy way to boost your glow without going to the store or shopping online for more products (no matter how fun that may be). Staying hydrated is also a huge factor since moisture comes into the skin from the inside as much, if not more, than out. Another tip is to stay away from physical exfoliants and switch to chemical ones. These products exfoliate more evenly and less harshly, whereas scrubs cause micro-tears in the skin that let in dirt and irritants. Seeing a dermatologist is also one of the best ways to create personalized routines for your skin, as well as getting exclusive treatments and procedures that will keep your skin glowing for years.
