According to the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), skin cancer is one of the most common cancer types. Further statistics from CDC show that approximately 5 million skin cancer cases are diagnosed in the United States annually. Data released by the American Cancer Society in 2021 shows that 100 350 people were diagnosed with skin cancer in 2020, and 6850 died. May is a month set aside to create awareness of skin cancer, especially melanoma.
Types
There are two significant categories of skin cancer, and these are melanoma and non-melanoma cancer:
- Melanoma cancer is a dangerous type of skin cancer and is commonly referred to as bad skin cancer. While it only accounts for 1 percent of skin cancer cases, it is the leading cause of death related to skin cancer.
- Non-melanoma cancer refers to a type of skin cancer that is often less life-threatening and easier to treat but can be severe. There are two types under this category: Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
Causes
The leading cause of skin cancer has been identified as unprotected exposure to Sun’s ultraviolet rays though other causes exist. Genetics, for instance, plays a role in skin cancer development since 10% of people diagnosed with melanoma have some genetic disposition. Other causes are:
- Having fair skin
- Many abnormal moles
- Family history of skin cancer
