Botox may have become one of the most popular treatments globally, but plenty of misinformation surrounds it. We want to take a moment to expose these misconceptions. Here are seven myths about Botox we thought you should know.
Myth #1: Botox is unsafe and dangerous
This myth stems from the belief that Botox is a derivative of botulinum toxin, the same thing that causes food poisoning. The truth is Botox does come from a protein found in botulinum toxin; however, the amount used in treatments is too low to be toxic.
Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Botox in 1989 for specific medical conditions and then in 2002 for cosmetic purposes. As long as a qualified medical professional administers it, Botox is a highly safe treatment.
Myth #2: The procedure is painful
Along with it being safe, Botox injections are far from painful. Most people have described the feeling of the procedure as a tiny pinch. That’s probably because the process entails fine needles injecting a small amount of liquid. Depending on the number of injections, you may feel a slight discomfort that lasts only a few seconds.
Myth #3: Botox only treats fine lines and wrinkles
While Botox has become famous for smoothing over aesthetic concerns, its applications don’t stop there. Botox can help treat medical and dental conditions such as migraines and bruxism (teeth grinding). Other health issues that can be relieved with the use of Botox include:
- TMJ disorder
- Strabismus
- Eyelid muscle spasms
- Cervical dystonia
- Excessive sweating
- Overactive bladder
Myth #4: You can get addicted to Botox
The truth is Botox does not consist of any addictive properties, and there is no evidence to suggest otherwise. People just enjoy the results of the procedure and become dependent on it to look younger.
Myth #5: Botox makes your face look “frozen” and emotionless
This idea of Botox giving people a “frozen” look is a common myth. If anything, the purpose of Botox is to relax certain muscles to provide you with a softer, fresher appearance. If anyone using Botox appears expressionless, that could be a result of excessive use. It’s essential to visit a highly trained and experienced provider who knows the exact number of units to administer.
Myth #6: Botox is permanent
This treatment typically provides results that last somewhere between three and six months. It all depends on the patient and how often they received the injection. But overall, Botox is a temporary solution.
Myth #7: Botox is only for women
Probably the biggest misconception of them all, Botox is not designed for one specific gender. Everyone ages and can benefit from Botox’s results if they choose. The only difference is that men require a higher dosage because of their stronger facial muscles.
