Here, we’ll review the basics of this procedure for individuals who may be interested in ear reconstruction.
What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a procedure to adjust the size, structure, or shape of the ears. It may be used in the event of injury or birth defects impacting the ears. It may also be used to alter the appearance of the ears to increase the patient’s self-confidence. For instance, if a patient feels that their ears are too prominent or protrude too far from their head, an otoplasty may bring them peace of mind.
Otoplasty can be performed on people of virtually any age. The ears are typically full-sized after the age of five. But, in some instances, it has been performed on children as young as three. Otoplasty doesn’t impact the patient’s ability to hear or the placement of the ears on the head.
What Are The Benefits?
Otoplasty may provide benefits for various cosmetic concerns relating to the ears, including:
- Ears that protrude far from the head
- Ears that are disproportionate to the head
- Birth defects or injuries causing irregularly shaped ears
- Previous ear surgery that didn’t achieve the desired results

What Can I Expect from the Procedure?
Prior to the otoplasty procedure, you’ll go through a medical exam with your doctor. At this time, you’ll also have a discussion with your doctor about desired results for the ear restructuring and the risks involved.
Before the surgery, you’ll likely be advised to stop taking certain medications and to stop smoking. The procedure generally takes place in your cosmetic surgeon’s office, an outpatient facility, or a hospital. General anesthesia or local anesthesia in combination with a sedative is usually administered for patient comfort during the procedure. An otoplasty typically takes about two hours, but the duration of the procedure depends entirely on the changes being made.
Following the procedure, your doctor will inform you of how long to wait before resuming regular activities. You may also need to avoid anything that puts pressure on the ears, such as sleeping on your side. Stitches from the procedure are generally taken out after a week, but some stitches dissolve naturally.
