Eczema: Do You Know About It? This Month is Eczema Awareness Month

October 13, 2021

October is Eczema Awareness Month. This month, you get to learn a few basics of this skin condition. Around 16.5 million people in the U.S are thought to have the condition. Unfortunately, 6.6 million of them have moderate to severe symptoms. We can support those with symptoms if we understand the condition. Eczema is an umbrella name for a group of conditions that make the skin inflamed, itchy, and have a rash-like appearance.

You can get any of the seven types of eczema, each with a few distinct symptoms. Given that many of the symptoms are the same across various types, you may need the help of a doctor to determine the condition you are suffering from. The condition is not contagious. Therefore, it cannot be spread from one person to another through direct skin contact or by air.

The condition is triggered by an irritant, either inside the body (from food) or outside (such as pollen). This causes the body to push the immune system into overdrive and produces inflammation. The inflammation causes the symptoms discussed above.

There is no cure for the condition. However, various topical and prescription medication types can alleviate the symptoms present. Medical dermatology helps ascertain the condition along with the triggers. You receive treatment, depending on the type and severity of the condition. Your dermatologist will also advise on diet and lifestyle changes.
