Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is an effective treatment where the dermatologist freezes the tissue instead of cutting to treat many skin conditions. Liquid nitrogen is sprayed on to the area of skin, freezing it. Light freezing causes a peeling, moderate freezing a blistering, and hard freezing a scabbing.

The most common uses for cryosurgery are to treat actinic keratoses, warts, acne, scars, benign growths and some skin cancers.

What is a Cryotherapy Session Like?

At Bay Dermatology, your dermatologist will apply liquid nitrogen using a special applicator with a cotton tip. The applicator is pressed gently against the affected area for a few seconds, depending on the size and diagnosis of the lesion. In some cases, the dermatologist will attempt the freezing process twice.

With Cryotherapy, you may experience a slight stinging sensation, which can increase should the chemical touch the surrounding healthy skin. Some redness or swelling may occur following cryotherapy treatment.

What Types of Cancer Can Be Treated with Cryotherapy

According to the National Cancer Institute, cryosurgery is used to treat several types of cancer, and some precancerous or noncancerous conditions.

  • Retinoblastoma
  • Early-stage skin cancers
  • Precancerous skin growths known as actinic keratosis
  • Precancerous conditions of the cervix
