Common Toenail Conditions and How to Treat Them

August 24, 2020

Did you know that we can address nail conditions as well as skin conditions? There are several different toenail conditions that we can treat in our office. Here are a few of the most common.

Toenail Fungus

If your toenails are yellow or dark brown, it could be the first sign of a fungal infection. These infections are most common in people whose feet are in dark, moist environments such as inside your shoe while working or exercising. Toenail fungus can spread to other toes, and it can cause a significant amount of pain and discomfort. Effective treatment usually requires anti-fungal medication.

Discoloration of the Nail Plates

Often, the nail becomes discolored over time due to repetitive exposure to certain chemicals or environments, such as nicotine stains. Some medications can also cause nails to become slightly discolored. Most of the time, some slight discoloration without additional symptoms is nothing to worry about. But if you’re concerned, we’ll  be happy to take a look and see if treatment is necessary.

Whitening of the Nail Plates

If your nails seem to be turning white, it could be an indicator that your nails aren’t getting enough keratin. Keratin supplements, including topical nail treatments, may be able to relieve this problem and return your nails to normal. We can help you find the best products for this purpose.

If you are having one of these or another toenail problem, contact us today to schedule your appointment.
