January 21, 2020

Having an itchy scalp can be very troublesome. The itch, at times, might seem to be unbearable. There are a lot of different potential reasons for an itchy scalp. It is important to have your itchy scalp diagnosed by a dermatologist or doctor if it persists even with over-the-counter treatments. Here are some of the causes and solutions for itchy scalp.

Causes of Itchy Scalp

There are many different potential causes for itchy scalp. The most common is seborrheic dermatitis. This is a skin condition that can also affect the face and chest. It is a rash, but one that is not always clearly seen. Sometimes it can be a red-orange rash. This condition is usually easily treated with over-the-counter remedies that your dermatologist can recommend.

Psoriasis is another common scalp condition. Psoriasis presents itself as itchy scalp with flaking skin and redness. Psoriasisan occur anywhere on the body, but many people only have it on their scalp. Psoriasis is not contagious and can be treated with medicated shampoos, although often times  prescription medications are required. See a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment of psoriasis.

Some allergic reactions can also cause an itchy scalp. If you have tried a new shampoo, hair dye, or other hair product and it resulted in an itchy scalp with or without raised bumps, it could be an indication of an allergy. Try switching hair products and see if the symptoms go away. If so, you might want to see adermatologist for skin patch testing to determine what you are allergic to so it can be avoided in the future.

Common Treatments

For seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis there are several over the counter treatments available. These are mostly in the form of medicated shampoos containing tar, selenium, sulfur, zinc, or salicylic acid. You must work the shampoo into your scalp and leave it in for several minutes before rinsing out. If these are ineffective, you may need to see a dermatologist for further diagnosis and treatment. Prescription medications and topical ointments may be required.
