Acne

Acne

Acne can be a frustrating skin condition, but if you have it, know that you are certainly not alone. It affects up to 50 million Americans annually.  Blemishes, whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, and any red, swollen bumps that give off heat are signs of acne.

What Is Acne?

Acne is skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. It’s most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.

Some believe it is just a part of growing up and that eventually you will outgrow it. Unfortunately, it isn’t like that. It can have lingering psychological and leave physical effects like scars. The earlier you start treatment, the lower your risk of such problems.

Causes

Acne typically appears on your face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.

  • Excess oil (sebum) production
  • Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria
  • Inflammation

Acne Affects Almost 100% of Teenagers

Myths

You’ve probably heard the claims, but eating chocolate and greasy foods, your hygiene, and the cosmetics you use will have little to no effect on acne.
